As a professional copywriter, I typically try to charge clients 50% of the total cost upfront. Many people don't do this and have probably been screwed once or twice. I have been cheated out of work that took hours to create and I wanted to have a source that writers can check and vent...if you are not getting paid up-front for your work, check here to see if your client is a deadbeat BEFORE doing the work.
Also, if you're a copywriter who has been cheated, let me know and we will post the deadbeat client right here to warn other copywriters to stay away from him or her. Often times, there is no real course of action you can take, especially if the client is in another country. At least you can keep others from working for the same filthy, thieving scum. We work very hard to please our clients and it's a slap in the face when they don't pay. It's time to slap them back.
